The first selection starts in 1626, before the fort’s foundation, and ends with events in 1991. This is an editorial boundary, not the end of the city’s history. Documentaries may have been made later; their release years are shown.

The selection has gaps. We mark them rather than invent events to create an unbroken sequence. Modern images are distinguished from archival ones, with credits and reuse terms in the photo archive.
