Energetik becomes the Palace of Arts

In Bratsk, the historical name Energetik House of Culture belongs to the predecessor of today’s Palace of Arts at 26 Naymushina Street. Its website identifies 1991 as a new chapter for the cultural centre opened in 1963.

A cultural centre for a city of power builders

The Irkutsk Regional House of Folk Art dates the start of Bratsk’s Energetik House of Culture to 30 September 1963. This places its origins within the hydroelectric construction era, when the new city was developing a cultural environment alongside its industrial infrastructure.

The regional publication also records later institutional recognition: victories in the exemplary cultural institution competition in 1999, 2004 and 2006, followed by second-degree recognition in the model cultural centre competition in 2017. These milestones trace a continuing story, from a builders’ cultural centre to a municipal home for creative work.

When Yevtushenko read Bratsk Hydroelectric Station to its builders

One of the venue’s most memorable episodes concerns Globus, a live cultural discussion series. Its host Fred Yusfin recalled that on 3 May 1964, during its twenty-seventh edition, Yevgeny Yevtushenko read Bratsk Hydroelectric Station to a packed Energetik auditorium. A lengthy autograph session followed.

An earlier “Globus” event with Yevtushenko took place at the Summer Theatre in August 1963. Yusfin also left an account of that meeting.

Fred Yusfin and the art of bringing people together

On 28 November 2023, the Palace held Minister of Culture of Bratsk, an evening remembering Fred Yusfin on the ninety-fifth anniversary of his birth. The title reflects the city’s regard for an organiser whose work connected builders, writers, musicians and young people.

The biography published by the Palace mentions “Globus”, the Bratsk Sea celebration, the Varyag camp, the children’s festival “Pearl of Bratsk” and preservation of the city’s film chronicle. These projects took place at different venues.

How an arts and education complex emerged

Tatyana Gayevskaya, a participant in the institution’s transformation, described bringing together the cultural centre’s groups, music and art schools, and libraries. Her 2011 open letter dates the reconstructed building’s completion to 1992, while the Palace’s official overview highlights 1991. The accounts record different aspects of a transitional period.

Gayevskaya recalled support from station director Anatoly Petrunko and mayor Ivan Nevmerzhitsky. She also named visiting performers including Valery Khalilov, Alexander Tsygankov, Lyubov Kazarnovskaya and Graf Murzha. Her letter supplies no performance dates; it is a participant’s testimony rather than a complete touring calendar.

A municipal institution and its present organisation

The Palace’s official organisational information gives its legal creation date as 19 March 1993. This does not replace the cultural centre’s 1963 origins or the early-1990s transformation: the history of a cultural place and the registration history of its operator need not begin together.

Today it is a municipal autonomous cultural institution accountable to Bratsk’s culture department. The page checked on 20 October 2026 names Daniil Vladimirovich Burnin as director. Its structure encompasses children’s and youth activities, amateur artistic work, theatrical programming, production and technical services. A public programme depends on sustained work across all these professions.

657 seats, a stage and a large screen

The official technical description lists 657 seats in the main auditorium. Installing an additional front row by agreement increases capacity to 684. These figures describe different configurations.

Its stage measures ten metres wide, ten deep and seven high. Published equipment includes digital sound consoles, wireless microphones, stage lighting, projection equipment and a 9.6-by-5.76-metre LED screen. A separate equipment list covers the Mirror Hall. Large productions and smaller programmes have different spatial and acoustic needs; the published specifications explain some of the practical work behind accommodating them.

Costumes begin long before the curtain rises

An anniversary feature published by the Palace in November 2023 follows the costume workshop through Nadezhda Korabanova’s account. Preparing a production meant finding solutions, discussing them with colleagues and fitting garments: costumes had to communicate an idea while allowing performers to move.

Yunost: the longest dance tradition

Yunost was established in September 1973. Its official profile identifies it as the Palace’s oldest group. Folk-stage dance, classical foundations, children’s repertoire and contemporary stylised productions form parts of its programme.

The repertoire includes Russian dances, dances of other peoples, and playful and narrative pieces. The ensemble takes part in city celebrations and presents its own programmes; Olga Kushnerova is listed as chief choreographer.

Sources

Surprise: dance within a larger production

Surprise was formed in November 1991, during the same transitional period that carried the old cultural centre into a new institutional format. It works with classical, folk-stage and popular dance, including children’s, narrative and contemporary pieces.

The ensemble participates in the Palace’s musical tales and shows. Anna Shrayner is listed as chief choreographer.

Shar: theatre through speech, movement and attention

Shar traces its beginnings to April 2003. Its profile lists acting, stage movement, speech technique and public speaking. These are complementary tools for holding an audience’s attention and making a stage action convincing.

The checked profile names Inna Yudina as director. The company also takes part in the Palace’s combined productions.

Sozvezdiye: circus alongside dance and theatre

The Sozvezdiye circus studio was founded in 2014. Its disciplines include juggling, balancing, physical expression and speciality acts. The official profile names Irina Kodolova as its leader.

The studio combines circus technique with choreography and theatrical staging, taking part in children’s events, large concerts and the Palace’s fairy-tale productions.

The brass orchestra: music in motion

The Palace’s brass orchestra has operated since 1998; its official profile connects its creation with Oleg Matayev’s initiative. Oleg Naumov is named as conductor. Its repertoire includes military marches, waltzes, classical music and contemporary Russian and international works.

The orchestra also performs marching displays combining music with movement.

Christmas Star: the region gathers in Bratsk

The nineteenth Christmas Star sacred music festival brought together 580 participants in 2018, including 386 children. The Palace’s results report lists thirty-eight groups and twenty-six soloists, with judges assessing 119 performances, seventy-three of them by children.

Participants came from Bratsk, Irkutsk, Ust-Ilimsk, Kirensk, Nizhneudinsk, Ust-Kut and other areas. Such a gathering turns a neighbourhood cultural address into a regional place for sharing experience. The results give special recognition to Dunyasha from Kirensk, awarded a diploma for preserving traditional calendar customs and song folklore.

The festival also has an earlier visual record: BST’s archive contains coverage of Christmas Star in 2014. The photograph below comes from that edition.

A festival that continued remotely

Christmas Star ran remotely from 17 January to 10 February 2022. Organisers reported more than 450 participants: fifteen choirs, eighteen ensembles and eight soloists. This was not a story of a packed auditorium, but of creative exchange continuing through another format.

Entries were assessed in academic and traditional singing. Criteria included intonation, rhythm, technical difficulty, respect for musical traditions, artistic interpretation and stage presentation. The regional House of Folk Art and the Palace shared organisational responsibilities. The festival maintained regional connections even when participants were not appearing together on a single stage.

Baikal Star: a place for young discoveries

On 28 March 2026, the Palace published photographs from the Baikal Star children’s and youth creativity festival gala. Its account recognises participants, teachers, parents and audiences: a major celebration depends on many more people than those visible in an individual act.

BST’s reports recorded earlier editions: stage performances in 2024, and circus acts and a handicrafts exhibition in 2025. Music and dance share this venue with several other forms of children’s creative work.

Library No. 8: a neighbour’s history and relocation

Family Reading Library No. 8 worked in the Palace building for many years. Its history began in June 1972 with a children’s library at 45 Primorskaya Street, and it adopted a family-reading format in 2013. Its activities included support for blind and partially sighted readers, the Six Dots Braille group and creative workshops.

In August 2026 the library announced its relocation from 26 Naymushina Street to 37a Yubileynaya Street. BST reported on 4 September that it was merging with Ivan Naymushin Library No. 13, retaining its collections and staff. Visitors should check services at the new address with the municipal library system.

Arranging assistance before a visit

The Palace asks visitors requiring assistance to contact its ticket office, reception or an administrator in advance. Its official accessibility page also publishes a policy on situational assistance. This provides an opportunity to discuss individual requirements before travelling.

Discuss your route through the building, accompaniment and seating when contacting the venue. Current contact details are on the official website.

Tickets, arrival times and recording rules

Before visiting, consult the Palace’s official programme and visitor rules. The institution requires a separate ticket for each spectator regardless of age; admission after a performance begins is at the administrator’s discretion. Phones should be silenced inside the auditorium.

Photography and audio or video recording of performances require written permission from the administration. Ask in advance if you wish to record a child’s performance.

A reported criminal case involving a former director

On 28 April 2026, BST, citing prosecutors and investigators, reported that a case involving a former Palace director had been referred to Padun District Court. Prosecutors alleged that fictitious employment during 2017–2024 caused losses exceeding 3.3 million roubles. The report states that the defendant denied guilt.

This describes the dated report, rather than guilt established by a judgment. A reliable account of the court proceedings’ outcome had not been confirmed when this article was prepared.
