1971–1984

Pikhtovaya: the road to an Olympic medal.

The luge school has its own place in city history, built through a track, training and early national competitions.

01

First came the track

The Pikhtovaya luge track opened in 1971 and hosted the first USSR championship in March 1973. Tatyana Korneva became the first women’s national champion; the city chronicle identifies her as an electric welder. Sporting and working lives overlapped.

02

Sarajevo, 1984

On 12 February 1984, Valery Dudin won Olympic bronze. Years of training and competition separated the track’s opening from the medal. His achievement belongs to the history of a local sporting infrastructure and school, rather than a disconnected list of notable residents.

03

The boundary of this chapter

Twenty-first-century Olympic results are not attributed to the Soviet period here. This chronicle retains events occurring by 1991; the school’s later achievements belong in a subsequent historical chapter.
