A village as a museum
Angara Village grew from efforts to preserve the region’s wooden buildings. Its account is not limited to Russian village life: an Evenki exhibition was added in 1982. A relocated structure preserves original material while acquiring a different setting.
Political exile returns to the narrative
Visitors entered the Ryabikov house exhibition in December 1989. Several museums joined an association in early 1990. Alongside construction achievement, longer histories became visible: exile, earlier settlements, Indigenous cultures and ordinary objects.
Residents become keepers
The Bratsk local history society was founded on 26 March 1991. History was gathered through documents, memories and collections, beyond official anniversaries. Preservation itself raises questions: why did a particular house survive, and which parts of earlier life remained without a museum?
