Theatres of Bratsk.

Two professional theatres and two distinct histories: Tirlyamy Puppet Theatre and Bratsk Drama Theatre, their first productions, people, changing homes and festivals.

The puppet theatre’s first curtain

The city executive committee approved a puppet theatre on 23 August 1968; its first performance followed on 28 October in the renovated Yunost club. Puppeteers came from across the country and produced four premieres in their first year.

The official history names director Zolotaryov, designer Makarov and actors Nikolai Gaidar, Lyudmila Kuznetsova, Arkady Badilovsky, Olga Vasyutinskaya, Nikolai Borisov and Yekaterina Parilova. The company soon toured the region and BAM construction communities.

Yevgeniya Semiusova became director in 1969. A building on Podbelskogo Street became its home. Directors Nikolai Gaidar, Yelena Chekhovskaya and Vladimir Biryukov brought different approaches to puppetry.

How Tirlyamy got its name

In 1984 the company staged Bratsk writer Gennady Mikhasenko’s Tirlyamy in the Underground Kingdom. The characters later gave the theatre its name: Tirlyamy was adopted for its thirtieth anniversary in 1998, commemorating the writer.

International activity included exchanges with Słupsk in Poland and a German-language performance of Igrayem Buku in Mistelbach, Austria. Later the old building became unsafe and the theatre joined Bratsk-ART.

Theatre on Cushions, the Skazki pod Dubom festival and education projects followed. The company celebrated fifty-five years in 2023, connecting childhood memories with professional performance and touring.

A drama theatre for the city

Plans for a drama theatre developed in 1984. The first premiere, Estafeta, took place in Padun on 26 February 1986. Its wooden building and distance from the Central district shaped the early audience’s experience.

The company moved to Bratsk-ART in 1997 and received its own building, the reconstructed Rossiya cinema on Mira Street, in 2003. Changing homes altered access, staging opportunities and the relationship with audiences.

For the fortieth anniversary in 2026, the exhibition “Laughter, Tears and Love…” brought together posters, photographs and records. These materials preserve productions beyond their final performances.

Festivals, a chamber stage and touring

In 2016 the drama theatre launched the U Bratskogo Morya festival named after Gennady Mikhasenko. Visiting companies broadened the city’s theatrical experience and enabled artistic exchange.

A chamber stage opened in 2021, offering a more intimate relationship with audiences. In 2026 the company joined the Bolshiye Gastroli touring programme again, travelling to Abakan while the M. Yu. Lermontov Russian Drama Theatre visited Bratsk.

The puppet and drama theatres offer different repertoires and age recommendations. Their own websites below provide current programmes and tickets.
